It was two years ago today when Daredevil Season 2 premiered on March 16, 2016. And did you know what’s highly significant about it? The answer’s in three words – Jonathan Edward Bernthal! The man I never knew or heard of before until February of 2015 when it was announced that Jon Bernthal was picked by Marvel Studios to play the part of Frank Castle, The Punisher in Daredevil Season 2. I got excited when I read the news about it on my wi-fi smartphone right after I arrived at my former job. Then, a little over a year later, Daredevil Season 2 premiered on Netflix. And the incredible Emmy-worthy performance of Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, The Punisher, instantly took the entire world by storm. Never mind the likes of Charlie Cox and Elodie Yung, Jon Bernthal literally stole the whole show!!
Believe me. Jon nailed The Punisher role perfectly! Just think of it. Frank and a chained up Matt arguing over how crime should be fought in Hell’s Kitchen, the touching graveyard scene, the courtroom tantrum and entrance, the epic prison fight, Earth, Wind, and Fire’s 1975 hit song Shining Star, Karen and Frank’s first signs of romance (#kastle), Frank confronting The Blacksmith (aka Ray Schoonover), faking his own death, and most of all, the epic debut of the iconic skull emblem as he was leaving the Castle Family house one last time. Can anyone who is an actor match their acting performances with Jon Bernthal? No, they can’t! Not even the other Punisher actors can compare to Jon Bernthal’s masterful performance in my opinion.
So impressive was Jon’s acting performance that Jeph Loeb and the Marvel Studios crew instantly green-lighted the creation of The Punisher solo series which premiered on November 17th of last year. And just like in his debut appearance in Daredevil Season 2, Jon masterfully perfected the role of The Punisher and made Marvel’s The Punisher a masterpiece. And already Punisher Season 2 is filming as I speak. Thus, we need to be patient and wait for many months; it’ll be early 2019 before we see Punisher Season 2 premiere on Netflix and become spellbound by Jon’s incredible acting performances once more.

Why does The Punisher play the harp?

It’s easy to imagine The Punisher shooting up criminal hideouts and blowing off the heads of thugs and mob bosses as the ultimate punishment for their crimes. But it’s hard to imagine (and believe) that there is also very gentle side to The Punisher no one knows about except for The Defenders (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist), Microchip (aka David Linus Liberman), and Spider-man (aka Peter Parker) who actually saw and became amazed at him doing something no one has ever thought he could do with his violent hands– play the harp. A gentle stringed musical instrument no one could ever believe that The Punisher would have such talent and ability to use his otherwise destructive hands to gently and tenderly pluck and caress its strings.

Indeed, it’s very hard to imagine and believe that the Punisher’s violent hands that brake bones, strangle necks, and punch out guts are the very same hands that softly and tenderly pluck, caress, and gracefully sweep across the strings of the harp.

Why does he do it, you asked? Because Frank is doing this in memory of his family whom he communes with through songs, poems, and prayers as he gracefully wave his battle-scarred arms and hands across the strings to fill his private family shrine with harp music that moves The Punisher to joyful tears.

Where did the Idea of The Punisher and his Harp come from?

It’s a concept I, Sherry Konkus made up myself. It combines my new found obsession with The Punisher that I had since 2014 and my life long love for the harp. It is the very best concept I ever made. This is my version of The Punisher from Marvel Comics who is portrayed by me as the punishing harpist who plays the harp in memory of his late family who got killed by a criminal mob years ago and whenever he needs a break from waging a one man war against organized crime.

The Punisher was created by Gerry Conway with the help of artists John Romita, Sr. and Ross Andru. His name coined by Stan Lee. The Punisher is owned and trademarked by MARVEL.

The idea, concept, and inspiration behind The Punisher’s portrayal as The Punishing Harpist who plays the harp in memory of his family is in fact my own. Sweetest. Idea. Ever.
