Jon Bernthal, The Punisher, to appear in Men's Health Magazine.

Today Men’s Health Magazine published a very special article on their website all about The Definitive Punisher himself, Jon Bernthal and how he balances between being an awesome Punisher actor and a loving dedicated father/husband to a family of 3 children, Henry, Billy and Adeline, and his wife Erin whose heart Jon won right after he asked Willie Nelson to play one of his classic songs at a concert years ago before they were married. That article is also going to appear in the upcoming January/February 2019 issue of Men’s Health Magazine that’s scheduled to be out on the shelves next month.

In the article, Jon admits that while he’s far away from his family filming Punisher Season 2 he would experience the very same pain Frank Castle would feel (besides suffering from an injured hand on the first day of filming) when he deals with grief and trauma right after his family was brutally murdered before his very eyes.

Bernthal’s crazy work schedule—The Punisher’s second season shot for six months in New York—means that he misses more games than he would like. (His wife, Erin, brings the kids to New York each summer when they’re on break.) The distance gnaws at him. He tells me he draws on the pain of being separated from his own family to play the grieving Frank Castle. “I know there’s a ticking clock on this career, and one day the phone is gonna stop ringing,” he says. “Above all, I have a responsibility to take care of my family, but it’s hard because it takes me away from the people I love. . . . If I’m going to be away from my kids, I want one day for them to look at it and say, ‘Well, Dad was gone, but he was giving everything he had.’ ”

Speaking of trauma, Jon experienced a horrifying near-tragic event not too long ago when he almost lost his daughter Adeline. Just when Jon was about to take part in the production of First Man, Adeline suddenly had a seizure, fell into a coma, and was rushed to the hospital. There it is discovered that she was suffering from a near-fatal infection in the brain called encephalitis that could’ve killed her if she wasn’t treated on time. She laid in a coma for three days before she finally woke up to find herself not being able to recognize her family at first. Thankfully she fully recovered and was her normal self in no time. Jon, upset and in panic mode, had to give up the First Man role and zoom back home to Ojai, California to be with his family, especially his then-2-year-old daughter. This clearly shows that in Jon’s world, Family must always come first. Nothing else matters. #BigLove

One of the special secrets to making his portrayal of The Punisher a huge success is owning a lot of music related to his wife and children. He listens to them to get the idea of what Frank is thinking about when he reminisces about his wife and children who are gone. To him, the feeling is so powerful that it makes him want to throw-up. No kidding. It’s exactly what he said in the article.

Speaking of music, I’m delighted to see Jon mentioning that he wanted his boys to play with Mr. Piano.

“By the way, I want them to learn how to play piano and do their schoolwork with the exact same level of fierceness,” he adds. “Whatever they do in this world, I’m okay with it, as long as they go full bore.

This reminds me of scenes in both Daredevil Season 2 and Punisher Season 1 where Frank finds himself in homes where a piano is seen. One, a white one, is seen in his own former home before Frank destroyed it along with the poor piano. The other one, a brown one, is in the Lieberman residence displaying a lot of photos of Micro and his family together on top.

Perhaps when Frank Jr. and Lisa were alive, they both practice on the white piano while Frank plays guitar and encourages his children to learn music through piano and guitar. Maybe Maria plays piano and guitar, too. I don’t know.

What I do know for certain is that Frank and his family must have been one wonderful musical bunch who sang and played music during their happy times together before the tragic event at the Central Park carousel occurred.

Will we find a piano again in Punisher Season 2? Most importantly, will we see more guitar scenes again? Will we see Punisher doing a musical number in the new season? How would Jeph Loeb like doing a scene where Frank also plays the harp along with guitar? If Jon can get his boys to play piano, can he and his family play the harp, too? Would Jon be good at the harp if he decides to play one? If he does take up the harp, would he take harp lessons if he has the time to do so?

Lots of questions to ponder while we all wait for Punisher Season 2 to premiere on Netflix next month in January.
