Getting personal: My struggle to pay off my concert harp.

Me and my harp I’m trying to pay off.

UPDATE: I decided to cancel the order of the Camac Mademoiselle lever harp until a much better time when I’m able to buy the harp without finding myself in deep, deep debt I can’t dig myself out of.

****

After spending years struggling to raise $$ to afford buying a harp, which I ultimately got finally after 25 years of struggle, I’m afraid I’m going to have to ask for help with the harp one more time.

Here’s what took place within the past few years. In 2016, I finally was able to afford putting money down to buy a concert harp I’ve always dreamed about ever since I was a little girl. I applied and is finally approved for financial aid from Allegro Credit which sent me a document which I and my mother, who is a co-signer, signed together and paid for the deposit and the shipping charges.

The document says that we agree with purchase the Camac Athena EX Concert grand pedal harp (the large one in the photo above) at 11.99% interest rate for 5 years. The Athena cost $16,000 to buy. I put down $3,200 and bought the harp which arrived at my house on 9/15/16. Two and a half years later I’m still paying the bill with my mother’s help.

As of now I owe Allegro $11,299.16 which I want to pay off in a short time span. If I’m not able to pay off the harp by the time my 5 year contract expired, I will have to deal with a much higher interest rate and spent decades trying to pay the harp off. And I don’t like that at all. I just couldn’t afford to spend decades trying to keep up with the payments and find myself up to my armpits in debt.

When I first got the harp, my mother and I were planning on putting large sums of money to pay off the harp as quickly as we can. But an unexpected circumstance occurred that lead me to find myself laid off from work. I worked at the Shiawassee Community Mental Health (now called Shiawassee Health and Wellness) for 9 years and used some of the money I earned to put down towards buying the concert harp. But a company that supported the center ended up filing for bankruptcy, forcing everyone to eliminate a program that I greatly benefit from for 9 years. With no other programs available that worked for me, I ended up getting laid off from work. All the benefits needed to help pay off the harp real soon now gone down the drain!

I tried looking for another job, but I wasn’t able to find the right kind of job just for me. I had to resort to using what I have in my social security to make the payments on the harp which to me is not enough.

Weeks ago, I signed up for financial aid to buy another harp of great interest which is a used Camac Mademoiselle lever harp. A harp that replicates the concert pedal harp perfectly. I have a special taste in harp styles; I only want the kind that you see in concert halls and in the Marx Brothers films whether it’s in a pedal or lever harp forms and the Mademoiselle fits the kind of type perfectly.

The Camac Mademoiselle Lever Harp.

I signed up for financial aid to buy the lever harp and got pre-qualified for it. I have just enough money to put down towards buying the harp and be able to come up $220 needed to make the payments for both the pedal harp and the lever harp together.

But I agreed with mom that we have to pay off my big harp I name “Grover” first before I put money down to buy the lever harp. I may have enough to afford making one harp payment a month, but not enough to make two harp payments a month. I certainly do not want to find myself not being able to pay off a big harp debt along with losing my apartment I’m renting, my possessions, and my savings, you know.

I’m very happy to say that though various means, including asking people for help to get the harp, I was able to fulfill my lifelong dream of owning my very own concert harp. For 25 years I’ve been asking people many times for help to afford buying a harp. When I finally got the harp in September, 2016, I stopped asking for help assuming that mom and I will have what it takes to pay the harp off quicker. But because of unexpected circumstances that came my way since then, I’m afraid I’m going to have to ask people, like you, for help with the harp one more time.

I want to raise $11,300 to pay off the pedal harp. The lever harp I want cost $4,500 to buy. I have the $850 needed to start making the payments on the lever harp, but it had to go towards living expenses. Nothing else. I don’t want to suck all my money dry to play beautiful glissandos on my favorite Heavenly instruments, you know.

I know this isn’t a crowdfunding site, but I saw how this community have helped a lot of people out in their daily struggles in paying off bills and stuff, so I decided to give myself a shot at asking for help from you guys from the Daily Kos here.

I want to raise enough $$ to pay off all my harps and have enough money to live on. Can you help me out, please?

If you like to help me afford all of my harps, you can make a donation to help pay off my harps here on my PayPal site. Any amount is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!
